Things to do in Jakarta

Explore Jakarta’s history when you visit Kota Tua, the old city centre. Start at Bank Indonesia Museum where you’ll discover Indonesia’s monetary and economic history. Then go to the Jakarta History Museum. Housed in the former city hall, this museum showcases Jakarta’s history from 400 AD through the colonial era and into the present day. Don’t forget to see the Jagur cannon. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the beauty of Indonesian art at the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics. Here you’ll find works by Raden Saleh and Affandi along with ceramics from around the world.  Visit the Komodo Dragons at Ragunan Zoo, the world’s third oldest zoo. You’ll see orangutans, babirusas, and even the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. Next go to the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, and marvel at the gorgeous Islamic motifs and water features but remember to dress modestly. After a long day exploring, bask in the sun on the golden sands of Ancol Beach.

Getting around Jakarta

Jakarta’s premium taxi companies are the safest and quickest way to travel around the city. Choose a few taxi companies before you depart for Jakarta and study photos of their roof logos and drivers’ uniforms. Before entering a cab always ask “Pakai argo” (meter). Find another taxi if they say no. For the best fares and service, book your taxi online. If you need to bypass city traffic, TransJakarta buses run in dedicated lanes.

Best time to visit Jakarta

Jakarta’s tropical climate offers year-round temperatures of about 28°C (82°F). Plan your visit from April through May and from September through October. That way you avoid the rainy season, but there’s still enough rain to cool the city.
